Elaine Nunnally AWS
Elaine Nunnally is an award winning watercolor artist from Leesburg, Virginia. She has been painting for as long as she can remember and is particularly in love with the medium of watercolor. She has been painting with watermedia for over 35 years. After a 40 year career teaching high school art, she retired to paint full time. While she embraces experimental approaches to the use of watermedia, she often returns to the pure and traditional methods with which she first started. Her latest series began in 2007 after taking a workshop and being challenged to come up with a theme for the week. Driving back and forth on Interstate 81 in Virginia to arrive at the workshop every day, she noticed how abstract and beautiful the shapes and colors were. Thus was born the “Highway Series”.
“We all spend an enormous amount of time behind the wheel of a car—it’s the American way of life. So I thought I’d try to paint those scenes differently by using the design elements, especially color, to create a new vision of driving on the highway. I find it fascinating, actually, and I’m having fun with it!”
Elaine is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, the Baltimore Watercolor Society, the Illinois Watercolor Society, and the San Diego Watercolor Society, among many others. She is currently the president of the Virginia Watercolor Society. Her work has been exhibited in solos and group shows, locally, nationally, and internationally.
